If You Knew Her

If You Knew Her

1985 & 1990

Icons-Bright Green-02.png

Like a performance from which the central character is missing, this installation took the form of a crime scene, constructing the apartment of a young waitress whose apparent disappearance is under investigation by police. Objects have been tagged with police identification markers; a psychiatric report has been left at the scene. Prominent among the exhibits is a collection of photographs and memorabilia of former male lovers, now catalogued as evidence. While clearly part of Clark's ongoing exploration of how material culture constructs identity, this piece also investigates the role of culture in constructing those who accumulate such objects. The missing protagonist's magazines, paperbacks and, above all, her television - with its ceaseless romance - implicate our culture's heterosexual imperative in this character's disappearance.
